Privacy Policy
Effective Date: July 28, 2025
Introduction
Welcome to Coffee in the Sun. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information in connection with your use of our mobile application ("the App"). Our goal is to help you find great coffee spots with sunshine, and we are committed to protecting your privacy while doing so.
This policy applies to all users of the App. By using the App, you are asked to consent to the practices described in this policy.
Our Commitment to Your Privacy: The "No Data Stored by Us" Principle
We have designed 'Coffee in the Sun' with a "privacy by design" approach. A core principle of our commitment to your privacy is that we do not store your personal data on our servers. The App functions as a temporary conduit to provide you with real-time information and does not create a user account or profile for you.
What Data is Processed and Why?
To provide our service, the App needs to process a limited amount of information. This processing happens when the App communicates with our third-party service providers to fetch map and weather data. The data processed includes:
Geographical Location (Latitude and Longitude): This is essential for the App to identify your current location and find nearby coffee shops.
IP Address: Your device's IP address is automatically sent when it connects to any internet service. Our partners use it to send data back to your device and for security and operational purposes.
Our legal basis for this processing is the performance of our service to you and your explicit consent, which you provide when you agree to let the App use your location and access these services.
Detailed Information on Third-Party Services
The core functionality of 'Coffee in the Sun' relies on specialized services from our trusted partners. These services have their own privacy policies and act as independent data controllers. We have chosen them because they are necessary to make the App work.
OpenStreetMap
Purpose: To display interactive maps and provide geographical data.
Data Processed: When the App shows you a map, your device sends your IP address, requested geographical coordinates, and device information to OpenStreetMap.
Data Handling: OpenStreetMap uses this data to send the correct map images to your device. To deliver maps quickly and reliably, OpenStreetMap uses a global network of content delivery servers (CDNs). This means your IP address may be processed by one of these servers, which could be located anywhere in the world. According to their policy, OpenStreetMap may retain network logs containing your IP address for security and operational analysis for up to 180 days.
Their Privacy Policy: You can review the OpenStreetMap Foundation's Privacy Policy for more details: https://osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy
Open-Meteo
Purpose: To provide real-time and forecast weather data, including cloud cover and sun information.
Data Processed: To get the weather for your location, your device sends your IP address and geographical coordinates to the Open-Meteo API.
Data Handling: Open-Meteo uses this data to provide the relevant weather forecast. According to their policy, they retain server logs containing this information for technical and security purposes for up to 90 days, after which the logs are deleted.
Their Privacy Policy: You can review Open-Meteo's Privacy Policy for more details: https://open-meteo.com/en/terms
Shademap
Purpose: To provide the sun and shadow simulations for your location.
Data Processed: To calculate shadows, your device sends your IP address and location data to Shademap.
Data Handling: Shademap acts as an independent data controller and uses this information to provide its simulation service. According to their policy, they may store this information for as long as is necessary for the purpose it was collected.
Their Privacy Policy: You can review Shademap's Privacy Policy for more details: https://shademap.app/privacy/
Our Use of Client-Side Software Libraries
Our App uses open-source software libraries that run entirely on your device to function correctly. These libraries do not collect or send any of your personal data to us or to their developers.
Leaflet.js: This library is a tool that helps us render the interactive map provided by OpenStreetMap on your screen.
SunCalc: This library performs the calculations needed to determine the sun's position for any given time and location. This calculation happens locally on your device.
Your Data Protection Rights under GDPR
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA), you have certain data protection rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These rights include:
The right to access: You have the right to request information about the data being processed.
The right to rectification: You have the right to have inaccurate information corrected.
The right to erasure: You have the right to request the deletion of your personal data ("right to be forgotten").
The right to restrict processing: You have the right to request the restriction of the processing of your personal data.
The right to data portability: You have the right to be provided with a copy of the information in a structured, machine-readable format.
The right to object to processing: You have the right to object to the processing of your personal data.
The right to withdraw consent: You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time where we relied on your consent to process your information.
How We Handle User Rights Requests
Because we do not store your personal data, we cannot directly access or delete it. However, as the data controller for the App, we are committed to helping you exercise your rights.
If you wish to make a request regarding your data (e.g., access or erasure), please contact us at the email address provided below. We will act as a facilitator for your request. This means we will:
Acknowledge your request.
Formally forward your request to our relevant third-party partners (OpenStreetMap, Open-Meteo, and Shademap) on your behalf.
Provide you with information on how you can contact them directly to follow up and verify the completion of your request.
Data Security
We take the security of the data processing associated with our App seriously. While we do not store your data, we rely on the security measures implemented by our partners, OpenStreetMap and Open-Meteo. We have chosen these partners based in part on their commitment to industry-standard security practices to protect data during transmission and processing.
International Data Transfers
As described above, using this App involves transferring your IP address and location data to our third-party partners. These partners, and their own service providers (like CDNs), may operate servers in various countries around the world, including outside of the European Economic Area (EEA). These transfers are necessary to provide the App's core functionality. By consenting to this Privacy Policy, you agree to these transfers.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will also update the "Effective Date" at the top of this Privacy Policy. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
