Use the waterfront as a specific search route
The official tourism guide to waterfront parks and piers includes places around the Embarcadero and other waterfront areas. Select an actual seat or venue along your planned route; a long waterfront does not share one exposure.
Look inland as well as across the water
A bay view can be open while buildings behind or beside the seating block the sun. Check the direction relevant to your planned time. Piers, planted areas and spaces next to a facade can have very different local obstructions.
Hills are outside the building model
Coffee in the Sun uses mapped buildings to estimate shadows and does not include terrain. On a sloping street or near a ridge, the local horizon needs an additional check. The apparent exposure of a raised terrace also cannot be read directly from a ground-level map.
Do not read cloud conditions from a bright map area
Weather and building geometry are separate. A location free of building shade can still be under cloud or fog, and wind affects comfort independently. Check the local forecast and conditions before choosing a long outdoor stay.
Make one nearby fallback part of the plan
Compare two stops within your actual walking area at arrival and departure times. If a table is covered, full or uncomfortable, the second option remains useful without another long trip. Verify current hours and seating through each venue.
Try the building-shadow check before you leave
Open Coffee in the Sun, find your chosen spot and compare the estimated building shadows at arrival and departure. The free app includes today's timeline and three time jumps per day. The model uses mapped buildings, whose coverage and accuracy vary; it excludes trees, awnings and terrain, and cloud cover is not part of the shadow answer.
Use the five-step terrace check to interpret the result. Keep a nearby alternative and confirm the real seating on arrival.
